Timing of light exposure
Morning light and midday light feel similar. To your brain's clock, they are almost opposites. One resets it. The other barely registers. Here is what that means for how you structure your mornings.
Your circadian clock does not respond to light equally at all hours. It has what researchers call a Phase Response Curve: a map showing when light shifts the clock, by how much, and in which direction.
Morning light advances it (shifts it earlier). Evening light delays it. Midday light falls in what chronobiologists call the dead zone, producing almost no shift at all.
Khalsa et al. (2003) mapped this precisely in humans, showing that the strongest advancing effect occurs around your core body temperature minimum, roughly 1 to 2 hours before your natural wake time.

The practical consequences of this are direct.
Get outside within 30 to 60 minutes of waking. Not a walk at lunch. Not a bright lamp on your desk. Outside, in the first hour. Even on an overcast day, outdoor light delivers around 10,000 lux. A typical indoor environment delivers 100 to 500. The retinal cells that drive your SCN are intensity-integrating: the difference is not subtle and an indoor lamp does not compensate.
Leave the sunglasses off for the first part of the morning. The light signal needs to reach your retina unfiltered to drive the clock. A few minutes is enough to start the process.
Understand that timing beats duration.
Thirty minutes outside at 7am does more for your clock than two hours outside at 1pm. The curve is not forgiving of mistiming.
This matters beyond sleep. Your circadian clock governs cortisol, insulin sensitivity, immune function, mood regulation, and cellular repair.
Anchoring it correctly each morning is not optimisation. It is maintenance of the system that coordinates almost every physiological process you have.
The light environment your biology expects costs nothing and is available every morning.
